Focus on service, not cost
In the mobile disco industry, it’s not uncommon for DJs to incur expenses of at least £200 to facilitate an event, resulting in a financial subsidy from the DJ to the client. This practice is regarded as unsustainable.
If you believe you’ve secured a DJ for £200 or less, it’s essential to exercise caution. Without a signed contract or written confirmation, expectations should be tempered. In the event of a DJ failing to meet obligations, recourse may be limited without formal documentation.
A Balance of Budget & Quality
While we acknowledge the importance of budget considerations, it’s essential to recognise that quality often aligns with investment. Opting for a cheap DJ may yield mixed results, with the likelihood of receiving exceptional service being slim.
Many prioritise spending more on their wedding attire than on evening entertainment, despite the latter leaving a lasting impression on guests. It’s crucial not to compromise on the quality of your event’s entertainment, as skimping may result in a subpar experience in the long run.
To illustrate the true cost of hosting a disco, consider a scenario where a DJ performs 40 shows annually with basic equipment and a music library. Even with conservative estimates, the expenses far surpass initial expectations.
For instance, a four-hour show entails approximately eight hours of chargeable labour. Assuming Basic Minimum Wage at £11.44/hr (as of April 2024) that equates to £92 per person. Factoring in operational costs for, admin, advertising, gear hire, insurances, transport, depreciation and profit margins, it becomes clearly evident that a budget of £200 or less is insufficient to cover the true operational expenses associated with providing even a basic service let alone a premium one.
