Focus on service, not cost
In the mobile disco industry, it’s not uncommon for DJs to incur expenses of at least £200 to facilitate an event, resulting in a financial subsidy from the DJ to the client. This practice is regarded as unsustainable.
If you believe you’ve secured a DJ for £200 or less, it’s essential to exercise caution. Without a signed contract or written confirmation, expectations should be tempered. In the event of a DJ failing to meet obligations, recourse may be limited without formal documentation.
A Balance of Budget & Quality
While we recognise the importance of budget considerations, it’s essential to understand that quality often correlates with investment. Choosing a cheap DJ may produce mixed results, and the chances of receiving exceptional service are slim.
Many prioritise spending more on their wedding attire than on evening entertainment, despite the latter leaving a lasting impression on guests. It’s vital not to compromise on your event’s entertainment quality, as skimping may lead to a less memorable experience in the long run.
To illustrate the real cost of hosting a disco, consider a scenario where a DJ performs 40 shows annually with basic equipment and a music library. Even with conservative estimates, the expenses greatly exceed initial expectations.
For example, a four-hour show requires about eight hours of chargeable labour. With the Basic Minimum Wage at £12.21/hr (as of April 2025), this amounts to £97.68 per person. Considering operational costs such as admin, advertising, equipment hire, insurances, transport, depreciation, and profit margins, it’s clear that a budget of £200 or less cannot cover all the operational expenses even for a basic service, let alone a premium one.
